Democracy Listening Circles

Hosted By: The Peace Center

In this session, participants will learn how to listen to one another as we identify values that guide us as individuals, even those with whom we disagree, as we discuss the threats to our Democracy. Our goal will be to find a thread of common ground we can work with, as it will take all of us to address the injustices that abound due to disinformation and misinformation.

Facilitated by:

Barbara Simmons is the Executive Director of The Peace Center, serving for more than 30 years. She recently ‘unretired’ to return to the nonprofit educational organization. She is a Mediator, Facilitator, Educator and Organizer.  Simmons spent 20 years as a Professor of Practice at Arcadia University’s International Peace and Conflict Resolution master of arts program, teaching Advanced Mediation, Facilitating for Conflict Transformation and Restorative Justice. She has delivered trainings and workshops in Rwanda, South Africa and Northern Ireland in healing, bringing programs such as HROC: Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities, Multi-Track Diplomacy, Mediation and Compassionate Listening.

Gayle Evans, Senior Peace Educator

Gayle is the creator of the INVEST Student Success program and has been working with schools to bring about a more just environment for students considered ‘at risk’. She brings to The Peace Center a rich and varied background working in both the for-profit and non-profit world. Gayle has managed programs and grants, and was an adjunct teacher with Bucks County Community College. She also led the Diversity office of BCCC. Gayle is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Holy Family University. She lives in Newtown with her husband and is the mother of six daughters, and grandmother of two grandchildren.

The Peace Center has worked for decades to create and implement programs focused on the prevention, intervention and tertiary aspects of violence, conflict, racism and bigotry in schools, businesses and communities. Barbara has been involved with coalition-building with other important organizations and served on the Pennsylvania Attorney General Task Force and Bucks County Violence Prevention Task Force, the ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) of the Bar Association to name a few. Since The Peace Center views violence as a public health issue related to the cycle of trauma, it is only through working together as a community we can address it effectively.
